Union Bank of Nigeria Plc was established in 1917 as Colonial Bank and was acquired by Barclays Bank of London in 1925. As a result of the acquisition, the bank was renamed Barclays Bank (Dominion, Colonial and Overseas) – Barclays Bank (DCO) to reflect the new ownership. In 1969 the bank was incorporated as Barclays Bank of Nigeria Limited to comply with new banking regulations adopted in 1968.
